Course Description
The consecrated life, marked by the profession on the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience, is a great gift given to the Church by Jesus Christ. In the Year of Consecrated Life, Pope Francis focused the Church's attention on this great gift, asking the Church to "look at the past with gratitude," "live the present with passion," and "embrace the future with hope." This course will cover the nature and essence of consecrated life in the mystery of the Church, with a focus on the Vatican II documents Lumen Gentium and Perfectae Caritatis, as well as the Code of Canon Law and Pope St. John Paul II's Vita Consecrata. The history of religious life will be discussed to see how this has taken concrete shape throughout the Church's life. Lastly, the Scriptural foundations of consecrated life will be analyzed and discussed, specifically the Gospel foundations of the evangelical counsels.
